Perspective
As suggested by the Biblical allusion in the organization’s name (Matt. 5:13-16), the founder, Kate Redmon, is a Christian. However, as is generally the case for GED Test preparatory resources, spiritual growth content is not included.
Kate’s years of professional experience in vocational rehabilitation, K-12, and adult education made her realize the need for practical, accessible, and effective resources for students — with a focus on gaps in adult learning, particularly practical skills and math.
Light & Salt resources are organized into student-facing, instructor-facing, and free online resources.
Student-facing
Personalized Path Learning Adventures (PPLA) are designed for both individual and classroom learning. Three options are available:
Student Workbook, print version (recommended)
Student Workbook, PDF version (because international shipping is unavailable)
Online Course
All three are linked to a vast library of Virtual Class Videos, example problem playlists, and guided tutorials. The video content enhances an instructor’s presence in the classroom, equipping even the most novice instructors and tutors to effectively work with struggling learners.
PPLAs are highly flexible, allowing students to chart their most efficient path to GED readiness, regardless of current skill level or learning style. This empowers adult learners to take control of their educational journey, potentially fostering independent learning.
Each video teaches an overarching skill or concept that is essential for all learners. Example problems demonstrate how the concept or skill can be applied to beginners, experienced, and advanced students, allowing students to choose their practice level and work at their own pace. The time required to pass a test depends on the number of PPLAs needed to consistently perform at an experienced or advanced level. For most students, it’s one or two.
An added bonus is that when used in a classroom setting, PPLAs allow instructors to build and layer instruction flexibly, so new students can start a PPLA without the class starting over. Thus, GED Test Prep becomes more efficient because the PPLAs allow for varying levels of knowledge and skill.
Instructor-facing
The Teacher's Toolkit is a subscription-based digital library featuring over 3,000 classroom resources across all subjects. It includes printable and/or downloadable versions of all PPLA material and additional resources (such as classroom activities, games, social media graphics, and slide shows). Professional development, training, and consultation programs are also available for those who wish to up their game as they serve struggling students.
Free Online Resources
Most of Light & Salt’s free resources are math-focused because that is where Kate saw the biggest need and the lowest student “pass” rates on the GED. Those resources include:
The GED Math Crash Course includes a brief course overview, six core units (GED Basics, Algebra Essentials, Slope & Lines, Geometry, Data Analysis, Word Problems), review material, and GED practice tests.
A YouTube channel with educational videos for visual learners.
Online support group which provides 24/7 access to over 21,000 supportive members via Facebook.
Social media videos consist of short motivational videos and tips.
In addition, resources available for purchase include the Teachers’ Toolkit subscription and student guides (again, with over 3,000 resources in all subject areas). There is also support for all subjects in the online Facebook group.
The target audience is students working toward earning their High School Equivalency Diploma by passing the GED or HiSET tests, particularly those who have returned to education after stepping away, or those who have previously struggled or failed the test.
The materials and Teacher Toolkit are helpful for tutors, instructors, and nonprofit organizations supporting adult education, as well as supportive faith-based groups, although the curriculum is not religious in content.
Light & Salt began in 2014 and has rapidly grown into a powerful platform. In 2024 alone:
Over 72,000 people in 141 countries used the free online GED Math Crash Course.
Over 160,000 unique viewers were served through its educational YouTube videos.
Over 21,000 Facebook members received peer and instructor support.
Because the toolkit is housed in a shared Google Drive, instructor access requires Gmail or another Google-based email. Once entry is achieved, all resources can be adapted to fit students’ technical context. For example, every activity in the workbook includes a QR code for instant access to video content and other online resources, eliminating the need for a computer. Resources can also be printed, downloaded, or uploaded for use by students with limited internet access (i.e., those in correctional settings or who live in rural areas). If group learning is desired, a typical classroom set-up with desktop or laptop computers and internet access is needed.
Most student-facing resources are available free or on a “pay what you can” basis (minimum prices range from $0 to $3). Printed Workbooks range from $18 to $29. Instructors can purchase the Teachers’ Toolkit for $15/month or $162/year, an affordable option in the world of adult education publishing. Many discounts are available for bulk orders.
***True Charity Network Member discounts: The Teacher's Toolkit digital resource library is only $99 per user for a year's subscription (regularly $15/month or $162/year). An additional 10% off bulk student workbook purchases (10 or more books) is also available. Email veronica@lightandsaltlearning.org and mention that you are a True Charity member in order to receive discount.
How to order:It is designed with the understanding that often students needing the most help have the least resources to receive that help. Thus, there has been a conscious effort to make student-facing materials as affordable as possible. Indeed, “pay what you can” is a huge plus because it pairs affordability with the incentive to learn that students’ personal investment brings about.
There is strong support within the Facebook group, which has a worldwide core group of over 21,000 students, instructors, tutors, and volunteers. According to Kate Redmon, students come looking for subject-matter help but often find unexpected motivation in the success stories and encouragement posted by individuals in similar situations. When using the materials in an independent learning format, students must be self-motivated. Some students may find greater success in the classroom setting, paired with a tutor, or participating in a study group.
Independent online use is less likely to strengthen individuals’ social capital. If that’s an important goal, consideration should be given to utilizing the materials in a classroom or 1:1 tutoring relationship where the Teacher’s Toolkit’s adaptable social capital activities can be used.
