Love and Logic exists to help parents “raise self-confident, motivated children who are ready for the real world.” They teach parents to set limits for their children that allow them to directly experience the consequences of poor decisions – teaching kids that life is better when they make better choices.
Startup costs for a facilitator: $610 (facilitators guide and videos)
Cost for 10 participants/couples (parent workbooks): $90
The basic perspective of the course is that healthy children should perceive their parents as both loving and powerful. It was designed by a child psychiatrist and an educator who attempted to turn research informed approaches into practical advice. The tone of the Love and Logic approach is down-to-earth and humorous – they teach simple approaches designed for regular parents. Love and Logic is not a faith-based curriculum but does promote common-sense values that a Christian ministry can support.
Love and Logic’s primary course (Parenting the Love and Logic Way) is designed to be taught once a week for 6 weeks. Classes take two hours and are evenly split between videos and facilitated exercises/discussion. The content is not very dense – so it is easy to walk away with a simple application for each session.
This curriculum is not specifically designed for people in poverty, but it is simple, broadly relatable, and easy to follow. You could target parents whose children are at risk of entering the foster care system or those whose children are already in the system. Furthermore, because parenting is universal, you could provide the opportunity for middle- and upper-class participants to take the class along with your target clients. This could allow them to build relationships around common struggles.
The primary course works for children of all ages. Some course versions or supplementary materials are tailored to specific situations (such as kids with special needs, traumatic backgrounds, or kids under 5). There is also a course version designed for schoolteachers and one available in Spanish.
Any small nonprofit or church could teach this course.
Love and Logic offers a summary paper of several studies which corroborate the value of their approach. While the studies are not peer-reviewed, they do show significant positive effects on several thousand students in different locations, environments, and across socioeconomic groups. Parents and educators consistently report less stress, fewer behavioral incidents, and more positive relationships with children.
Love and Logic has been around since 1977. Over 1 million people have attended live seminars by the founders and 12,000 trainers have taken the curriculum to many more people.
Love and Logic provides no facilitator training. The curriculum is designed to be easy to teach and requires only one facilitator.
All you need is a basic classroom setup with the ability to play a DVD or digital file.
We love how simple and practical this curriculum is. You can find a version of it for nearly any parent or educator’s situation. We also love that it is both research-informed and the creators have made a serious effort to measure the effect of their curriculum scientifically.
Most of the videos are not highly produced. On net though, the quality of the content outweighs the occasionally clunky delivery.
